<International Diabetes>: Do you think the most important feature of the ADA is the new trials or is there something else that appeals to you?
Dr Fonseca: I think everything is important. It depends on what your interests are. There are 17000 people here and everybody has different interests. If you are interested in one aspect of type 1 diabetes, then there is plenty to choose from here and if you are interested in an aspect of type 2 diabetes then there is plenty to interest you also. It is very hard to say what the highlights are because everything is a highlight.

<International Diabetes>: Some people I have talked to at this meeting feel like there is something of a lull in the research that is coming out, mainly in that there is not much being seen in positive outcomes.
Dr Fonseca:I disagree. I don’t know why they would think that; look at the abstract book. There are thousands of abstracts and we have been seeing that for years. What people want is a magic breakthrough which cures everything and everybody lives forever. Yes, we want a cure for diabetes and we want a cure for cancer and everything else but you have to take incremental steps. We have come a long way in the last twenty years with respect to what we can do for diabetes.

Prof. Fonseca:

<International Diabetes>: There was an epidemiology lecture yesterday on that topic, that we have come a long way. A lot of the time we focus on diabetes as an epidemic particularly in the West and in the West we have come a long way in the treatment of diabetes and we shouldn’t be talking down what has been happening with diabetes right now but celebrating the reasons why there are so many more diabetes patients alive today.
Dr Fonseca: Mortality has dropped for the first time. This was a study published in Diabetes Care this month.

<International Diabetes>:You are the immediate past editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care. It is one of the top journals in the field right now. For people in China producing journals and trying to get their publications more to the forefront, what advice do you have for them?
Dr Fonseca: Keep publishing the best material that is available. Diabetes Care rejects 80% of submissions that comes to it, so there is plenty of material available that was considered good enough quality for Diabetes Care but which unfortunately couldn’t fit into that publication.
